6
The mishna lists additional blemishes that disqualify a priest from performing the Temple service: One whose legs are crooked and bend inward, causing him to knock his ankles or his knees into each other as he walks, and a baโ€™al happikim, and the ikkel. What is the ikkel? It is anyone who places his feet together and his knees do not knock into each other, i.e., he is bowlegged. A priest with a protuberance emerging alongside the thumb of his hand or the big toe of his foot,or one whose heel emerges and protrudes back from his foot, or one whose feet are wide like those of a goose are all disqualified from performing the Temple service. A priest whose fingers or toes are configured one upon the other, or one whose fingers or toes are attached, is likewise disqualified. But if they were attached from above the palm of the hand or the bottom of the foot only until the middle joint, he is fit. If they were attached below the joint, higher up on the finger or toe, and he cut to separate them, he is fit. In a case where there was an extra finger or toe on his hand or foot and he cut it, if that extra appendage contains a bone, the priest is disqualified even after it was cut, and if there is no bone the priest is fit. If there was an extra appendage on his hands and on his feet, six on each for a total of twenty-four, Rabbi Yehuda deems the priest fit and the Rabbis deem him disqualified. With regard to one who is ambidextrous and has control of both of his hands, Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi deems the priest disqualified, as his halakhic status is like that of one who is left-handed, and the Rabbis deem him fit. Concerning the kushi, the giแธฅor, the lavkan, the kipeโ€™aแธฅ, the dwarf, the deaf-mute, the imbecile, the drunk, and those with ritually pure marks, their conditions disqualify a person from performing the Temple service and are valid, i.e., they do not disqualify with regard to being sacrificed, in the case of an animal. Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says: An imbecile among animals is not optimal for sacrifice. Rabbi Elazar says: Even with regard to those with flesh or skin that hangs from their body, that blemish disqualifies in the case of a person and is valid in the case of an animal.

ื”ืžืงื™ืฉ ื‘ืงืจืกื•ืœื™ื• โ€“ that his knees are curved outwardly and his ankles inwardly and they strike against each other when he walks. Or he strikes with his knees -this is the opposite, that his legs are curved towards the outside and they are distanced from each other until that his [curved] knees are above towards the inside, striking each other.

ื‘ืขืœ ื”ืคื™ืงื™ืŸ ื•ื”ืขื™ืงืœ (swellings and bandy-legged) โ€“ and he explains ืขื™ืงืœ/bandy-legged in the first clause [of the Mishnah].

ื›ืœ ืฉื”ื•ื ืžืงื™ืฃ ืคืจืกื•ืชื™ื• โ€“ when he sits and brings close the soles of his feet one to the other.

ื•ืื™ืŸ ืืจื›ื•ื‘ื•ืชื™ื• ื ื•ื’ืขื•ืช ื–ื• ืœื–ื• โ€“ that they are curved towards the outside. And someone who has swelling/a lump that the swelling goes out from his great toe, a piece of flesh is round like a swelling/lump goes out from the thumb of his hand or from the great toe of his foot.

ืขืงื‘ื• ื™ื•ืฆื ืžืื—ื•ืจื™ื• (his heel juts outward) โ€“ as for example, that his foreleg stands in the middle of his foot, that half of his foot is towards the inside and half of his foot is towards the outside/back.

ืจื—ื‘ื•ืช ื‘ืฉืœ ืื•ื•ื– โ€“ they are weekend like that of a goose and their length is not not greater than their width.

ืงืœื•ื˜ื•ืช โ€“ attached to each other (i.e., webbed)

ืขื“ ื”ืคืจืง โ€“ the middle [joint] of the toes.

ืœืžื˜ื” ืžืŸ ื”ืคืจืง โ€“ that is to say, to the side of the nail that is entirely attached.

ื•ื—ืชื›ืŸ- that they will be separated/divided, it is kosher/appropriate.

ื”ื™ืชื” ื‘ื• ื™ืชื™ืจื” โ€“ an extra toe.

ืื ื™ืฉ ื‘ื” ืขืฆื ืคืกื•ืœ โ€“ for since he severed it, it is lacing a limb that is found in it.

ืฉืฉ ื•ืฉืฉ ืขืฉืจื™ื ื•ืืจื‘ืข โ€“ meaning to say, even if the fingers of his hand and the toes of his foot were equivalent, that on each hand and foot there are six [digits] apiece, even so, the Sages disqualify it. And all the more so if there were on one of its hands five [digits] and in the other hand six [digits], that is an even greater blemish. And the Halakha is according to the Sages.

ื”ืฉื•ืœื˜ ื‘ืฉืชื™ ื™ื“ื™ื• ืจื‘ื™ ืคื•ืกืœ โ€“ for he holds the weakness that he was born with was in his right hand.

ื•ื—ื›ืžื™ื ืžื›ืฉื™ืจื™ืŸ โ€“ they hold that he has (unusual) strength which happened to rest in the left hand (see Talmud Bekhorot 45b). And the Halakha is according to the Sages.

ื”ื›ื•ืฉื™ โ€“ the black [person].

ื”ื’ื™ื—ื•ืจ (red-spotted in the face) โ€“ red like a purple garment.

ื”ืœื‘ืงืŸ โ€“ extremely white (i.e., albino)

ื•ื”ืงืคื” โ€“ long and thin, that is not thick according to its length, and he is ugly and reprehensible.

ื•ื”ืฉื›ื•ืจ โ€“ but not from wine, it is considered like a blemish from the greatest blemishes in a person, for if he performed Divine Service, he is flogged, and his Divine Service is not desecrated. But the drunkard from wine and alcohol, if he served, he has profaned/caused the loss of priestly status. For in the portion of those who drink wine it is written (Leviticus 10:10): โ€œfor you must distinguish between the sacred and the profane,โ€ and someone who is drunk of our Mishnah is not one other than having drunk a great deal of wine or much honey, or that ate cakes of twisted pressed figs, and his mind became confused. These are considered like having blemishes and they do not profane the Divine Service.

ื•ื‘ืขืœื™ ื ื’ืขื™ื ื˜ื”ื•ืจื™ื โ€“ as for example (Leviticus 13:39): โ€œit is a tetter broken out on the skinโ€ or (Leviticus 13:13): โ€œfor he has turned all white.โ€ For if it was from impure Negaim/plagues (or suspected leprosy), it is not necessary to state it, for even with his entrance into the temple courtyard, he is liable for extirpation.

ื“ืœื“ื•ืœื™ื• (persons or animals afflicted with large warts) โ€“ like pieces of flesh that come out and suspend in them. And the Halakha is according to Rabbi Eliezer ben Yaakov.

These flaws do not disqualify a person from performing the Temple service, but they do disqualify an animal from being sacrificed: An animal whose mother or offspring were slaughtered that day, as slaughtering it would violate the prohibition against slaughtering the animal itself and its offspring on the same day; a tereifa; one born by caesarean section; one with which a transgression of bestiality was performed; and one that killed a person. And a priest who marries women by a transgression, e.g., a divorcรฉe or a woman who underwent แธฅalitza, is disqualified from performing the Temple service until he vows not to derive benefit from her. The vow ensures that he will divorce her promptly. And a priest who becomes impure through exposure to corpses is disqualified from performing the Temple service until he accepts upon himself a commitment that he will no longer become impure through exposure to corpses.

With an animal, it is disqualified from being offered, for it is written (Leviticus 22:26): โ€œ[When an ox or a sheep or a goat] is born, [it shall stay seven days with its mother, and from the eighth day on it shall be acceptable as an offering by fire to the LORD],โ€ excluding that which is born from the side (i.e., Caesarean birth). But with a Kohen who offers [having been born by Caesarean section], he is not disqualified though this.

ื”ื ื•ืฉื ื ืฉื™ื ื‘ืขื‘ื™ืจื” โ€“ a Kohen who married a divorcee or the femaleโ€™s issue of a priestโ€™s illegitimate connection/ a priestโ€™s wife illegitimately married to him or a prostitute unfit to marry a priest, he takes a vow and serves [in the Temple]. Even though he has not yet divorced [her], he is permitted to serve after he vowed that he will not benefit from her and she will not benefit from him until he divorces [her]. And he shall take the vow with the knowledge of the community which has no releasing [of the vow] other than for the performance of a Mitzvah. And we should not suspect lest he will go to a Sage and state that for the need of a particular Mitzvah, he asks of him that he should release him from his vow, for since we hold that a person who goes to release his vow must explain upon what he has taken a vow, certainly when the Sage heard that it was because she is a divorcee or a prostitute, that she is forbidden to him through a vow, he will not permit his vow.

ืขื“ ืฉื™ืงื‘ืœ ืขืœื™ื• ืฉืœื ื™ื”ื ืžื™ื˜ืžื ืœืžืชื™ื - here it is enough for him with acceptance, for we donโ€™t force him to take a vow [of deriving benefit] like concerning the sinful marrying of [forbidden] women, because there, his [evil] inclination overpowers him, [whereas] here, regarding [corpse] defilement, his [evil] inclination does not overpower him. Therefore, with mere acceptance, it is sufficient for him.
