With regard to one who lost his seal that he purchased from Yoḥanan, Yoḥanan and Aḥiyya would wait to resolve his problem until the evening. And when they added their accounts in the evening, if they found for him a surplus of money equivalent to the value of his seal, they would give him the corresponding libations. And if not, they would not give him libations. And the name of the day of the week was written upon the seals because of the cheats. They might try to use old seals that had been lost by the Temple officials or by someone who had brought an offering at an earlier date, so as to receive libations in a deceitful manner.

מִי שֶׁאָבַד מִמֶּנּוּ חוֹתָמוֹ, מַמְתִּינִין לוֹ עַד הָעֶרֶב. אִם מוֹצְאִין לוֹ כְּדֵי חוֹתָמוֹ, נוֹתְנִין לוֹ. וְאִם לָאו לֹא הָיָה לוֹ. וְשֵׁם הַיּוֹם כָּתוּב עֲלֵיהֶן מִפְּנֵי הָרַמָּאִין:

ממתינים לו עד הערב – Yohanan and Ahiyah join together, if they found excess monies in the hand on Yohanan corresponding to the seal that [if] one states that he lost it, and they give it to him.

ושם היום כתוב – on the seal, a certain day and a certain month.

מפני הרמאין – lest some found a seal that fell from his fell, either from Ahiyah or from Yohanan, and he comes now to take it. Ut on the day that he finds it, he is not permitted to take it out, as the person who lost it searches after it. And furthermore, one must suspect that lest he purchased the seal at the lowest market price and hid it until the market price became more expensive.

ממתינין לו עד הערב. שיזדווגו יחד יוחנן ואחיה, אם נמצאו מעות יתרים ביד יוחנן כנגד החותם שאומר זה שנאבד ממנו, נותנים לו:

ושם היום כתוב. על החותם, יום פלוני וחדש פלוני:

מפני הרמאין. שמא מצא חותם שנפל מחברו או מאחיה או מיוחנן, ובא עכשיו ליקח. וביום שמצאו אינו רשאי להוציאו, שהאובד מחזר אחריו. ועוד יש לחוש שמא לקח חותם כשער הזול והצניעו עד שנתייקר השער:
