Mishnayos Shabbos Perek 14 Mishnah 4

שבת פרק י"ד משנה ד׳

One who is concerned about pain in his teeth may not sip vinegar through them on Shabbat for medicinal purposes: however, he may dip his food in vinegar in his usual manner and eat it, and if he is healed by the vinegar, he is healed. One who is concerned about pain in his loins may not smear wine and vinegar on them on Shabbat because that is a medical treatment. However, one may smear oil on them. However, one may not use rose oil, which is very expensive and used exclusively as a cure. However, princes may smear with rose oil on their wounds on Shabbat because it is their usual manner to smear rose oil on themselves during the week for pleasure. Rabbi Shimon says: All of the Jewish people are princes, and it is permitted for them to smear rose oil on themselves on Shabbat.

הַחוֹשֵׁשׁ בְּשִׁנָּיו, לֹא יִגְמַע בָּהֶן אֶת הַחֹמֶץ, אֲבָל מְטַבֵּל הוּא כְדַרְכּוֹ, וְאִם נִתְרַפֵּא נִתְרַפֵּא. הַחוֹשֵׁשׁ בְּמָתְנָיו, לֹא יָסוּךְ יַיִן וְחֹמֶץ, אֲבָל סָךְ הוּא אֶת הַשֶּׁמֶן, וְלֹא שֶׁמֶן וֶרֶד. בְּנֵי מְלָכִים סָכִין שֶׁמֶן וֶרֶד עַל מַכּוֹתֵיהֶן, שֶׁכֵּן דַּרְכָּם לָסוּךְ בַּחֹל. רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר, כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּנֵי מְלָכִים הֵם:

לא יגמע את החומץ – and vomit it out, for the evidence of this thing is that it is for medicinal purposes [only], but if he swallows It and absorb it, it is better.

לא יסוך בהם יין וחומץ – for a person does not anoint himself other than for medicinal purposes.

אבל לא שמן ורד – because it costs a great deal and evidence of this thing is that it is for medicinal purposes.

שכן דרכן לסוך – without a wound

ור' שמעון אומר כו' - but the Halakha is not according to Rabbi Shimon (though the note below indicates that the word "אין" is a scribal error – and that according to Maimonides, the law is according to Rabbi Shimon).

לא יגמע את החומץ. ויפלוט, דמוכחא מלתא דלרפואה הוא. ואם מגמע ובולע שפיר דמי:

לא יסוך בהם יין וחומץ. דאין אדם סך מהן אלא לרפואה:

אבל לא שמן ורד. לפי שדמיו יקרים ומוכחא מלתא דלרפואה קעביד:

שכן דרכן לסוך. בלא מכה:
