אהלות פרק ט׳ משנה י"ד
When do these rules apply? When [the hive retains the status of] a vessel. [In the case of its] being defective, although [the deficiency may be] stopped up with straw, or according to the sages, [in the case of it] containing forty se'ahs, If the uncleanness is below it, within it or above it, the uncleanness cleaves upwards and downwards. Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Shimon say: uncleanness can neither ascend into [the defective hive] nor descend from it. [In the case where] it was one handbreadth high off the ground, If there is uncleanness below it, what is below becomes unclean; Within it or above it, [everything] directly [above] it to the sky becomes unclean.
בַּמֶּה דְבָרִים אֲמוּרִים, בִּזְמַן שֶׁהִיא כֶלִי. הָיְתָה פְחוּתָה וּפְקוּקָה בְקַשׁ, אוֹ מַחֲזֶקֶת אַרְבָּעִים סְאָה כְּדִבְרֵי חֲכָמִים, טֻמְאָה תַחְתֶּיהָ, בְּתוֹכָהּ, אוֹ עַל גַּבָּהּ, טֻמְאָה בוֹקַעַת וְעוֹלָה, בּוֹקַעַת וְיוֹרָדֶת. רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר וְרַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמְרִים, אֵין טֻמְאָה עוֹלָה לָהּ, אַף לֹא יוֹרֶדֶת מִמֶּנָּה. הָיְתָה גְבוֹהָה מִן הָאָרֶץ טֶפַח, טֻמְאָה תַחְתֶּיהָ, תַּחְתֶּיהָ טָמֵא. בְּתוֹכָהּ, אוֹ עַל גַּבָּהּ, כְּנֶגְדּוֹ עַד הָרָקִיעַ טָמֵא:

היתה פחותה. שנפחתה ובטלה מתורת כלי:
כדברי חכמים. דפליגי אתנא קמא ומשוו מחזקת ארבעים סאה לפחותה ופקוקה בקש:
אין טומאה עולה לה. בזמן שהטומאה תחתיה אינה עולה לתוכה:
אף לא יורדת ממנה. בזמן שהטומאה לתוכה אינה יורדת תחתיה:
תחתיה טמא. ותוכה וגבה טהור:
כנגדו עד הרקיע טמא. אבל תחתיה טהור:
היתה פחותה – that it became damaged and it is voided from the category of being a vessel.
כדברי חכמים – which is in conflict with the first Tanna/teacher and compares something that holds forty Se’ah to something that is damaged and stuffed with straw.
אין טומאה עלוה לה – at the time that the defilement is below it, it does not ascend into it.
אף לא יורדת ממנה - at the time that the defilement is within it, it doesn’t descend underneath it.
תחתיה טמא – but inside it/within it and on top of it, it is pure.
כנגדו עד הרקיע טמא – but underneath it is pure.
