אבות פרק ב׳ משנה ט"ז
He [Rabbi Tarfon] used to say: It is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it; If you have studied much Torah, you shall be given much reward. Faithful is your employer to pay you the reward of your labor; And know that the grant of reward unto the righteous is in the age to come.
הוּא הָיָה אוֹמֵר, לֹא עָלֶיךָ הַמְּלָאכָה לִגְמֹר, וְלֹא אַתָּה בֶן חוֹרִין לִבָּטֵל מִמֶּנָּה. אִם לָמַדְתָּ תוֹרָה הַרְבֵּה, נוֹתְנִים לְךָ שָׂכָר הַרְבֵּה. וְנֶאֱמָן הוּא בַעַל מְלַאכְתְּךָ שֶׁיְּשַׁלֵּם לְךָ שְׂכַר פְּעֻלָּתֶךָ. וְדַע מַתַּן שְׂכָרָן שֶׁל צַדִּיקִים לֶעָתִיד לָבֹא:

לֹא עָלֶיךָ הַמְּלָאכָה לִגְמֹר. לֹא שְׂכָרְךָ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לִגְמֹר אֶת כֻּלָּהּ כְּדֵי שֶׁתַּפְסִיד שְׂכָרְךָ אִם לֹא תִּגְמְרֶנָּהּ. וְשֶׁמָּא תֹּאמַר אֵינִי לוֹמֵד וְאֵינִי נוֹטֵל שָׂכָר, וְלֹא אַתָּה בֶן חוֹרִין לִבָּטֵל. עַל כָּרְחֲךָ הָעֹל, מֻטָּל עָלֶיךָ לַעֲבֹד:
לֶעָתִיד לָבֹא. לָעוֹלָם הַבָּא:
Rashi
לא עליך המלאכה לגמור. את כולה:
ולא אתה בן חורין. ליבטל מכל וכל לכך אם תעשה הרבה תקבל שכר:
"It is not your responsibility to finish the work": The Holy One, blessed be He, did not hire you to finish it all, so that you would lose your wage if you do not finish it. And lest you say, "I will not study [Torah], and I will not take the wage," [it states,] "but neither are you free to desist " - against your will is the yoke placed upon you to labor.
"in the future to come": In the world to come.
